Biography

LA based - CalArts professor, originally from Lansing, MI. Ed Emshwiller was an influential figure in the experimental film movement that helped expand the horizons of American filmmaking in the 1960s. He studied art at the University of Michigan, the École Nationale Supérieure de Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Art Students' League. He was an abstract expressionist painter and science-fiction illustrator before he turned to film and video. In 1979, he made the groundbreaking three-minute 3-D computer work SUNSTONE at the New York Institute of Technology. That same year, he became dean of the film school at Cal Arts, where he also served as provost from 1981 to 1986.
